Today, Adrian Warrell, also known as The History Man, spent the morning with Year 4, giving them a truly memorable learning experience all about the Anglo Saxons.
Adrian arrived dressed in full Anglo Saxon clothing, from leather shoes and a woollen outfit to chainmail armour. He began by explaining what life was like in Anglo Saxon Britain, taking the children through a clear timeline of England from 410AD to 1066AD to help them understand where this period fits in history. He shared fascinating artefacts, explained key advancements such as the design of ploughs and explored why people came to live in England and why there were so many kingdoms and rulers over time. He also answered many thoughtful questions from the children.
After break, Year 4 had the chance to experience Anglo Saxon life for themselves. They used a grindstone to make flour, dressed up in Anglo Saxon clothing including swords, shields and helmets and practised weaving wood to create the walls of a house. The children even made links back to their previous learning about the Plague. They also played a range of Anglo Saxon games, including one that was very similar to bowling.
