Meet the Team
Year 4
Welcome to Year 4!
This year, Miss Sanderson and I are so excited to be working together to support the children in Year 4. Our aim is to help every child thrive and truly enjoy their time in class.
I feel very lucky to be teaching such a wonderful group of unique, talented, and enthusiastic children. Over the year, we’ll be exploring lots of new ideas, asking thoughtful questions, and building on our learning together. In Year 4, we focus on becoming curious, confident thinkers who can explain our ideas clearly. We’ll also be working on becoming more independent and adventurous with our learning.
To keep up with all the exciting things happening in Year 4, please take a look at our news articles on the school Facebook page.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, you are very welcome to get in touch with me, either through the school office to arrange a meeting or by email.

National Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check
In June, all Year 4 children across the country will take part in the official Multiplication Tables Check. This is a short, computer-based assessment with 25 questions covering times tables up to 12 × 12. Children will have around 6 seconds for each question to read it, work out the answer, and type it in.
To support children’s progress, the government recommends that times tables are learnt gradually across the years:
- Year 2: 2s, 5s, and 10s
- Year 3: 3s, 4s, and 8s
- Year 4: 6s, 7s, 9s, 11s, 12s (all tables up to 12 × 12)
As your child is now in Year 4, they will be sitting this assessment in June 2026. If your child is still finding it tricky to quickly recall earlier times tables, extra practice at home will make a real difference.
- TTRockstars is a brilliant and fun way to practise.
- Weekly maths homework will also provide useful support.
- Other online games and quizzes can help keep learning engaging.
Although the test only covers multiplication, we also encourage children to practise related division facts. This strengthens their recall and helps them become confident, flexible mathematicians.
At school, we’ll continue to practise regularly through games, challenges, and quick-fire activities, helping the children grow their speed and confidence step by step. With practise both in school and at home, the children will feel ready and capable by the time June arrives.
Homework
Spelling
Each Friday, children will be given up to 10 new spelling words to learn, which will be written in their Homework Book. These spellings will be tested the following Friday.
During the test, each word will be read aloud in a sentence to give the children context, before they write it down. At the end of the test, they will also write a full dictated sentence. This helps them practise using their spellings in context and reinforces previously taught words.
Homework
Homework will also be set on Fridays and should be handed in by the following Thursday. If your child completes it earlier, they are welcome to bring it in sooner. Homework will always be explained in class so children know what is expected, though sometimes they may need a little extra support at home to consolidate their learning.
Maths
Times tables are an essential part of maths learning and are especially important in Year 4. All children are expected to know their multiplication and division facts up to 12 × 12, ready for the official Multiplication Tables Check in June. By this stage, your child should already be confident with the 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, and 10 times tables. If they are not yet secure with these, please practise them at home to give them the best chance of success.
- TTRockstars is an excellent resource for times table practice. If your child has misplaced their login, please let us know so we can provide it again.
Reading
Reading is part of our daily routine in school, so children need to bring their reading book and reading record book in every day. Please continue to read with your child at home and ask questions to support their comprehension and encourage deeper thinking about the text.
- All books read can be logged in your child’s yellow reading record, and we kindly ask that this is signed each time they read.
- Accelerated Reader quizzes can also be accessed at home, helping your child to track their progress. Just click the link on our ‘Pupil Zone’ page.
- If your child would like extra reading materials, feel free to use books from home, your local library, or books they enjoyed during home learning.

Reminders
Water
Please make sure your child brings water in a labelled water bottle to school every day. This helps them stay hydrated throughout the day and can also be used at lunchtime.
Healthy Snack
Children may bring a healthy snack for morning or afternoon playtime, such as fruit or low-sugar snack.
- Snacks should be kept in their tray (not their lunchbox) until eaten.
- Please avoid chocolate, crisps, or high-sugar snacks.
- As we are a nut-free school, please avoid any snacks containing nuts to keep everyone safe.
- More information can be found on our ‘Snacks & Lunch’ page.
Packed Lunch
Packed lunches should be in a wipeable lunch bag or plastic box. Year 4 lunches are stored on a shelf outside the dining hall and can only be accessed at lunchtime.
PE Kits
Please ensure your child’s PE kit is kept in school each week. Kits will stay on your child’s peg and will be sent home at the end of every half term for washing. If it needs washing sooner, please return it on a Monday so it is available for the whole week.
Forest School
On Forest School days, children come to school in their outdoor forest school kit (wearing either school shoes or plain black trainers). Children will need waterproof clothing as well as their Forest School kit and wellies/boots. This could be a waterproof all-in-one suit, or separate waterproof trousers and a coat. These extra layers help keep children warm, dry, and comfortable and the outdoor footwear keeps their feet dry… whatever the weather!
