Welcome to Year 1!

This year, Mrs Brown, Mrs Nelson and I are thrilled to be working together to support the children in a smooth transition from EYFS to National Curriculum in Year 1.

We are very much looking forward to being part of the children’s journey as they learn new skills and concepts, develop understanding and key knowledge, and explore a range of exciting new topics.  Children will still have access to resources for discovery and hands on learning whilst also developing more independence in more formal tasks.

To keep up with all the exciting things happening in Year 1, please take a look at our news articles on the school Facebook page.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, you are very welcome to get in touch with me, either through the school office to arrange a meeting or by email.

National Phonics Screening Check

In June, all Year 1 children across the country will take part in the Phonics Screening Check.  This statutory assessment is to check that children have learned and can use phonics to read.  It will include a combination of real and pseudo words using phase 2, 3, 4 and 5 phonemes.  The check is completed on a one-to-one basis with a familiar teacher and takes only about 10 minutes.

Throughout the year the children will be taking part in daily phonics sessions, learning new representations of sounds and alternative spelling patterns alongside revision of previously taught phonemes and graphemes.  They will also have plenty of opportunities to practise their phonic skills in continuous provision activities, reading sessions, phonic games and small group sessions.  The children will be well prepared to show what they can do and will enjoy learning.

To support their learning children will have phonically decodable books assigned to them each week on Bug Club which match their recent learning in class and will also have access to fun games and activities on Bug Club.

More information will be given throughout the year to support you in helping your children.

Homework

Reading
Reading is part of our daily routine in school, so children need to bring their reading book and reading record book in every day. Please continue to read with your child at home and ask questions to support their comprehension and encourage deeper thinking about the text.  In Year 1 the Bug Club online reading books are especially important as they are phonically decodable and closely linked to what the children have been learning in school.

  • All books read can be logged in your child’s yellow reading record, and we kindly ask that this is signed each time they read.
  • Reading and library books will be changed each Thursday so please make sure you send in your child’s books and signed reading record.
  • New online books will be added to your child’s Bug Club library each week.  These books are linked to the phonics they have been learning in school and are an effective way of developing phonic and reading skills.
  • If your child would like extra reading materials, feel free to use books from home, your local library, or books they enjoyed during home learning.

Homework
Other homework may also be set throughout the year.  This may include learning to read and spell tricky words, phonics games on Bug Club, sentence writing practice and activities linked to our topics.  All homework will be clearly explained and demonstrated to the children before being sent home.

Reminders

Water
Please make sure your child brings water in a labelled water bottle to school every day. This helps them stay hydrated throughout the day and can also be used at lunchtime.

Healthy Snack
Children may bring a healthy snack for morning or afternoon playtime, such as fruit or low sugar snack.

  • Snacks should be kept in their tray (not their lunchbox) until eaten.
  • Please avoid chocolate, crisps, or high-sugar snacks.
  • As we are a nut-free school, please avoid any snacks containing nuts to keep everyone safe.
  • More information can be found on our ‘Snacks & Lunch’ page.

Packed Lunch
Packed lunches should be in a wipeable lunch bag or plastic box. Year 1 lunches are stored on a shelf in the Year 1 cloakroom until lunchtime.

PE Kits
Please ensure your child’s PE kit is kept in school each week. Kits will stay on your child’s peg and will be sent home at the end of every half term for washing. If it needs washing sooner, please return it on a Monday so it is available for the whole week.

Forest School
On Forest School days, children come to school in their outdoor forest school kit (wearing either school shoes or plain black trainers). Children will need waterproof clothing as well as their Forest School kit and wellies/boots. This could be a waterproof all-in-one suit, or separate waterproof trousers and a coat. These extra layers help keep children warm, dry, and comfortable and the outdoor footwear keeps their feet dry… whatever the weather!
