Come and find out about Henri Matisse...
Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was a French artist known for his use of colour and shape. He became an artist after his mother bought him a set of paints when he was poorly, to keep him entertained. When he was young, he did lots of paintings but as he grew older he began to use a mixture of paint and collages.
The children created their own wonderful versions of ‘Les oiseaux’ by Henri Matisse. They explored colour mixing to create different shades of blue for the background. They then drew birds similar to Henri’s and cut them out to stick on their artwork.
Henri Matisse’s passion for birds, especially doves, began during the summer of 1936. Back in Paris and strolling along the banks of the river Seine, his attention was drawn to the merchants selling a variety of caged song birds and doves. He would return home with five or six birds at a time and was delighted with their shapes, plumage and singing. His love of birds lasted the rest of his life.
We talked about France and looked at some French landmarks and the children have enjoyed creating their own versions in the construction area and small world.
