Welcome to Year 4!

This year, we have Mrs Waters, Mr Lomax, Miss Jones and myself all working together to help the children in Year 4 thrive and enjoy their experience as much as possible. I am really looking forward to teaching Year 4 with a class full of unique, talented and wonderful children. Throughout the year, we will be working hard to learn a wide range of new concepts, discovering new answers and advancing our own learning. In Year 4, we learn to become good thinkers, be curious about our learning and explain our thinking. We learn to become more independent and to try out our ideas. When writing, we work on a neat, legible style that is joined, so that we are given the privilege to write in pen.

Please remember to look at our news articles (on the news page, or in 'related news' at the bottom of our class page) and Facebook page, so that you can keep up-to-date with our fabulous learning.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to arrange an appointment with myself via the school office or send me an email.

National Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check

The official National Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check takes place towards the end of the year during the month of June. This is completed on computer and will include 25 questions that involve any times table questions up to 12 x 12. The children will have about 6 seconds to read the questions, think of the answer and type it onto the keyboard. The government specify certain times tables are to be learnt by children in particular year groups:

Year 2: 2x, 5, 10x tables

Year 3: 3x, 4x, 8x tables

Year 4: 6x, 7x, 9x, 11x, 12x (all times tables)

As your child is currently in Year 4 they will be sitting the multiplication test in June 2024. If you know that your child is unable to rapidly recall the times tables from previous year groups, please help them with these at home. TTRockstars is a great way to practise and their maths homework will also help. Please help your child to recall the times table facts rapidly so that they are no longer reliant on using their fingers to count. The test does not ask children any division questions and focusses solely on multiplication questions. However, we feel children should also practise division questions to aid their rapid recall of facts. Whilst TTRockstars is a fantastic game, there are also other games online to help. We will be continuing to focus on our Times Tables during throughout the year and the children will also be working to gain rapid recall of all of their times table facts. In school, we will be playing games and trying to beat challenges with others.

Homework

Spelling: This will be set in their Homework Book and will contain up to 10 words to learn every week. This will be set each Friday and tested the following Friday

Homework: Homework will be set each Friday and be due in the following Thursday, however if it is completed sooner, please send it in. Homework will be sent out in the child’s Homework Book. Your child will always be shown the homework in class and understand how to access / complete this, each week. However, at times they may require additional support to help them consolidate their learning.

Maths: Please practise times tables with your child as they are vital for further education. There will be an official times table test in June (please see above). In order to succeed, all Year 4 children need to know all of their times tables and division facts up to 12 x 12. Your child should already be able to rapidly recall their 2x, 5x, 10x, 3x, 4x and 8x tables and the related division facts. If this is not yet the case, please practise them with your child to help give them the best chance of success in Year 4. Please use TTRockstars for times table practise during the week. If your child has forgotten theirs, please ask.

Reading: As the children read in school on a daily basis, they need to bring their reading book in every day. Please continue to hear your child read and ask them questions about the books that they are reading in order to develop their understanding and find evidence in the text. Children can note the books they read in their yellow reading record and remember that you can access the Accelerated Reader quizzes at home as they may not have the same number of opportunities to complete them in school. If your child needs extra reading materials, please use books that they have at home, the library or those that they used when learning from home.

Reminders

Water: Please ensure that your child has a bottle of water every day, labelled with their name, to keep them hydrated throughout the day and to drink with their lunch.

Snack: They can bring in a healthy afternoon snack, which must be kept in their coat pocket or book bag.

Packed Lunch: Please place this in a wipeable small lunch bag or plastic box. Year 4 have their own shelf to store these. Unfortunately, access to lunch bags/boxes is only permitted at lunch time.

P.E kits: Please ensure that your child’s PE kit is in school. It will be stored on their peg and will be sent home to be washed at the end of every half-term. If it requires washing prior to this, please ensure that it is in school on a Monday so that it can remain in school for the entire week.

Forest School: Please bring waterproof clothing (in addition to wearing their own clothes) and wellies on their Forest School dates. This could be a waterproof all-in-one suit or separate waterproof trousers and coat. This will help to keep children warm and their own clothes dry on those wet days!
