What an exciting day for our Year 4 students! They were transported back in time today when the History Man visited us, clad in traditional attire from the era of 'The Great Plague'. His captivating stories brought to life the realities of that harrowing time, enlightening everyone (adults included) about what people believed caused the plague, what it was actually caused by, and the various ways they fought against it.
The children were not only mere spectators; they became engaged historians! Our guest brought a treasure trove of resources that allowed them to explore the past hands-on.
For the second half of the lesson, the fun truly began! The children participated in a range of activities, including:
- Writing letters of wellness to imagine what it would be like to leave their town.
- Discussing the symptoms of various illnesses and figuring out possible diagnoses!
- Using a microscope and rat trap to understand more about hygiene and infection.
- And the highlight of the day: making their own medical potions with an array of herbs and spices believed to ward off the plague! Our classroom is now filled with the delightful aromas of their concoctions. It seems the scent will linger for weeks!
We'd like to thank the History Man for making history come alive for our students. What a fabulous way to learn about the past!
