In this Reception maths lesson, the children explored different ways to make the number six using Numicon shapes. They enjoyed combining pieces and quickly noticed patterns, with some children confidently explaining that 5 and 1 is the same as 1 and 5 because you can simply swap them around. The class generated a wide range of combinations and showed growing confidence in their number knowledge. Some children began to think more deeply, explaining that if they had 7, they could take 1 away to make 6, if they had 8, they would take away 2, and if they had 10, they would need to take away 4. This demonstrated an emerging understanding of number relationships and subtraction, as well as a willingness to reason and explain their thinking.
