Last week, Mrs Roach and 4 Year 5 children were invited to take part in the Pendle Maths Challenge competition. The competition is in partnership with Burnley FC in the Community.
8 schools from around Pendle (including Trawden) attended the challenge. Children had 3 separate parts to their morning; a deeper thinking challenge, a quick fire Arithmetic round and some Countdown challenges.
To ensure fairness, Mrs Roach was not allowed to sit or coach the children so they had to work together as a 4 to tackle the questions. The deeper thinking challenges were incredibly difficult and focused on problem solving skills. Each challenge had multiple steps too so children really had to keep their eyes peeled and read the question carefully.
The Arithmetic was much more to our taste! Children whizzed through this with such confidence and speed. Similarly, the countdown round. Children had to make target numbers only using the numbers given to them and could only use each number once (just like in the gameshow). Children managed to score lots of points in this round too, getting on target 4 times!
Overall, Trawden Maths team came 3rd place. This means that, in May, the team will once again represent school at the Finals at Turf Moor. Another wonderful trophy for the school display, as well as a couple of football themed books for school too!
Super efforts from Year 5 and hears hoping for another medal position in May!
