Following Children’s Interests in EYFS

In EYFS we love planning exciting themed topics for the children, but what we value most is following their individual interests and seeing how these ideas grow and develop with their friends.

This week, one child showed a particular fascination with BBC News and weather reporting. To build on this, we created a ‘news studio’ role play area where the children could step into the role of a news presenter. It was absolutely wonderful to watch their confidence as they acted out, shared reports, and took turns in front of their friends.

The interest quickly spread, inspiring many other children to have a go. This led naturally into exploring the weather, looking at maps of the UK, and talking about where we live. The children especially enjoyed creating their own weather maps and presenting them just like real forecasters.

We cannot wait to see where the children’s learning and interests will take us next. Their curiosity and creativity continue to shape our classroom, making every week unique and full of discovery.
