The autumn sunshine welcomed another group of enthusiastic Year 1 Gardening Gang children, who spent time exploring and learning about the different areas of our school garden. From the potting shed to the polytunnel, they discovered what we’ve been growing, smelt the herbs in our herb bed, and found out how we help and feed the birds in our garden.
The children explored our collection of seed packets and shared ideas about what they would like to grow next season. They were amazed at the size of the onions we had harvested! Our composting journey was also introduced — the children compared compost that had just been turned into a new bay with a compost bay that was still being added to, learning how the waste breaks down to become nutrient-rich soil.
They also helped to separate some of the marigold seeds we are saving, ready for planting next year. Arthur kindly brought in some conkers he had collected and wanted to plant — the children learnt how to test them to see which ones were healthy and would have the best chance of germinating and growing into a horse chestnut tree.
Another brilliant hands-on session in the garden, full of curiosity, teamwork, and lots of new discoveries!
