Image of Adapting Animals in the Forest

We took the Science Week theme of Adaptation to Forest School this week.

We thought about how animals have adapted to be able to use their senses in different ways.

First we played 'Wolves in the flock'. All the children were tagged with a piece of paper, some of which had been sprayed to smell different.  The 'sheep' had to use their sense of smell to find who were the wolves in the group even though they looked the same.

Next, we talked about how sheep and lambs can find one another even though to us they all look alike.  The children were all given sounds to make and had to use their sense of hearing to find their mum or lamb who was making the same sound.  It was very noisy and did actually sound a lot like a field full of sheep!

Finally, we talked about how some predators like wolves have very good eyesight and can spot an animal if it moves.  Our 'wolves' turned their backs while the sheep played but as soon as they turned the sheep had to freeze.

We enjoyed playing and learning about animal senses at the same time.
