Today in English, we continued our learning about kennings and took our lesson in a delicious new direction.
The children had the opportunity to taste crisps, popcorn, cheese, cucumber, yoghurt and crackers. As they sampled each food, they thought carefully about the taste, texture, smell and sound. Was it crunchy? Creamy? Salty? Smooth? This helped them to generate ambitious vocabulary ready to use in their writing.
Using their ideas, the children created their own food kennings. Here are just a few examples written by the class:
- Taste-lingerer
- Finger-flavourer
- Spoon-slipper
- Tongue-sticker
- Crunch-maker
The classroom was full of excitement and creativity as the children experimented with different word pairings. They were fully engaged throughout the lesson and showed great imagination when crafting their kennings.
It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm for poetry. We cannot wait to see their finished food kenning poems later in the week!
