Drawing Out Our Creativity! ✏️🎨

Year 5 have been sharpening their sketching skills! Inspired by artists including Henry Moore, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, the children explored how to make drawings look three-dimensional, creating the illusion of shape, depth and solid form on a flat page.

We began with continuous line drawings of our hands, keeping our pencils on the paper as we carefully followed the shapes we could see. First, children drew their non-dominant hand before taking on the extra challenge of drawing their dominant hand—using their other hand to sketch!

Next, we experimented with a range of sketching pencils and different ways of making marks. From the tiny dots of stippling to the overlapping lines of cross-hatching, children explored how to build up tone and give their drawings a sense of depth.

Even the humble potato had its moment in the spotlight! Children looked closely at the potatoes in front of them, using contour lines to follow their rounded shapes and uneven surfaces.

For their final task, our young artists brought these skills together to create observational drawings of shells. Looking carefully at curves, ridges and details, they used thoughtful pencil marks and shading to capture what they could see.

Well done, Year 5, for your patience, concentration and willingness to try new techniques. Take a look at our artists in action and their wonderful work! ✏️
