Harvesting, sowing, planting… and making popcorn! We certainly packed a lot into this week’s Gardening Club session!
A further two tubs of maincrop potatoes were dug up this week, and there were some lovely potatoes hiding beneath the soil!
More beans were picked, with some carefully set aside for seed saving. Our gardeners are already thinking ahead to next year and saving seeds so we can grow even more beans!
One of our beds of beautifully coloured Indian Corn was harvested and then came the really exciting part… we used some of our own corn to make popcorn! Seeing our beautiful homegrown Indian Corn transform into freshly made popcorn was fantastic. It smelt delicious as it cooked, and the verdict from the children? “It’s better than cinema popcorn!”
Three different varieties of pak choi were sown, getting another crop underway for the months ahead.
Following a previous taste testing session on the school yard, the children had asked if we could grow more pea shoots, so another tray of peas was sown. We’ll be looking forward to watching them grow and sharing them with our friends!
Cress head pots were planted too, ready to watch their little characters grow some very green hair!
Another lovely crop of tomatoes was harvested from the polytunnel too.
There was some fantastic teamwork, with our older gardeners helping the younger ones. It was lovely to see them sharing their knowledge, helping with the jobs and looking out for one another.
So many jobs, so much growing, harvesting, tasting and learning - another fantastic Gardening Club session!
