Last week was Road Safety Week. In class, Year 5 learnt about how to keep themselves safe as a pedestrian aswell as looking into how modern cars are helping keep not only those INSIDE the car safe, but those outside too.

Then came Go-Velo. Children were split into 2 groups and had a day and a half each of cycling proficiency training. They came in ready for their sessions with their bikes, their helmets and their winter gear. Although, on the first day some children were a bit unprepared for the cold and were struggling to feel their fingers to use the brakes. (Luckily, this was before they went out on the roads!).

Before children hit the roads, their bikes were all checked to make sure they were roadsafe. This involved the ABC check (Air, Brakes, Chain). Then the riding could begin. To start off with, children did a few warm up activities on the playground. These included an obstacle course where children had to weave in and out of cones. This was to help fine-tune their steering, braking and overall control whilst in charge of their bike. Children were then taught and practiced how to make observations safely by turning their head to either side and how to check behind them before moving off. Finally, children were taught how to signal. This is a vital skill for a cyclist to master as it helps other road users and pedestrians understand where they are going. Children showed great competence at using hand signals and keeping balance whilst doing so, which is very tricky.

Next up.... hitting the open road! Children had to show real skill cycling up Dean Street and another group had to cycle downhill too! All whilst staying in complete control of their bike. Whilst out on the road, children practiced different positions on the road. They were taught how to pass others, how to follow others and how to safely manoeuvre around parked cars. One group even had a huge horse to contend with!

The instructors were really impressed with children's behaviour, their resilience and their determination. They all managed to excel and achieve more than they thought at the beginning of the weak. All children either achieved their Level 1 or their Level 2 and are proud badge holders.

Well done Year 5 and we look forward to seeing you cycling safely soon. (Just make sure you remember your gloves)!
