This week in EYFS, the children have enjoyed continuing our Celebrations topic by focusing on birthdays and parties. We began by sharing our own experiences of birthday celebrations and talking about what makes them special. The children talked about when their birthdays are, how we grow and change each year, and how much they have already grown.

In our provision, the children explored lots of birthday-themed activities. They made birthday cakes using playdough, carefully shaping the dough and adding candles and decorations. In the small world area, they created their own party scenes and used imaginative language to bring their ideas to life. Many children also enjoyed role-playing parties, making invitations and joining in with different celebration-themed games. These activities helped the children develop their communication skills, creativity and confidence.

We also enjoyed a lovely creative activity inspired by last week’s Forest School adventure. After collecting a wonderful selection of autumn leaves, the children used them to make their own hedgehog leaf art. This followed a shared reading of the heart-warming tale The Hedgehog Who Wanted A Hug, which the children listened to with great enthusiasm. The story sparked lots of conversations about kindness and friendship, and the leaf hedgehogs were a beautiful way to extend this learning.

As part of Drawing Club, we began our next unit which is an “Animation from the Past”. This week, we watched short clips from the classic cartoon Wacky Races. The children were fascinated by the characters and the silly, inventive vehicles. They loved creating their own race drivers and crazy cars, using special codes to transform them into exciting and unusual designs. Their imaginations have been wonderful to see.

It has been a lovely week full of creativity, exploration and celebration. We are looking forward to continuing our learning next week.
