This week, our Gardening Club got busy collecting fallen autumn leaves to add to our leaf mulch bin — these will slowly break down over the next couple of years to make leaf-mould, a rich, natural soil conditioner that’s fantastic for our garden!
We also planted daffodil bulbs that we had lifted and stored from our pots last year, giving them a new home naturalising around the trees on the school field.
The children helped prepare and sow our mixed poppy bed, learning that autumn is the perfect time to plant poppy seeds — the winter cold helps “wake them up” from dormancy so they’re ready to germinate in spring.
Next year, our Year 5 children will harvest the poppy seeds ready to share with parents during their special Remembrance Assembly in November.
