Year 1 are making themselves dizzy with our new topic exploring spirals in art.
We practised making spirals with our bodies and realised for big spirals you need to move your whole body, not just your fingers. We watched the artist Molly Haslund creating circles and spirals on a large scale outdoors and were inspired to create our own
The children created small spirals on drawing paper at tables using a range of colours, large spirals using highlighters on large pieces of paper on the floor and enormous spirals with chalk on the playground.
The children also had a go at continuous sketching, using pens to create spirals all over their page without taking the pen off the paper.
We then talked about how we can use colour to create snails. We looked at pictures of real snails and talked about the patterns we could see. Using pastels we drew spirals and made colourful snails by filling the enclosed spaces with patterns.
We even made spirals with natural materials at Forest School!
Spirlas have really helped with gross and fine motor control and look amazing - we hope you agree.
