🌿 During the half-term holiday, on one of Mrs Nelson's visits to the school garden to clean and top up Shadow’s feeding station, she spotted a small hedgehog on the other side of our school field.
As the hedgehog was out during the daytime, we knew she might need some help, so we quickly whisked her off to our friends at Willow Top Hedgehog Rescue.
We have named our little hedgehog Poppy. She is an autumn juvenile and is currently underweight. Poppy needs to gain around half her body weight again to give her the best chance of getting through the winter.
It was discovered that Poppy also has lungworm, which is giving her a very bad cough, thankfully she is now on the right medication, and we are hoping for a speedy recovery.
We have received an update from Willow Top on Friday and are pleased to share that Poppy has already put on 28g! Well done, Poppy!
Once she has gained enough weight, and if the weather is suitable, we hope to welcome her back to her home on our school field, where she can join Shadow in enjoying our wildlife-friendly grounds.
Thank you, as always, to Donna at Willow Top Hedgehog Rescue for taking such wonderful care of our prickly friends. We’re so glad we spotted Poppy when we did!
A little reminder: out in the day is not okay! If you spot a hedgehog out during the daytime, please contact a local hedgehog rescue for advice.
