It was another busy and exciting week in our school garden, with plenty of harvesting, seed saving, delicious homemade food, taste testing and a very special trophy to celebrate!
Our gardeners harvested a lovely batch of school-grown carrots, including one particularly weird and wonderful specimen that appeared to have grown its very own arms and legs! With the addition of a pair of googly eyes, it certainly had plenty of character! We do seem to have a talent for growing some rather unusual vegetables in our school garden!
We also put one of our school-grown pumpkins to good use, transforming it into a delicious, healthy pumpkin hummus dip. Our freshly harvested carrots were perfect for dipping, and the children thoroughly enjoyed tasting the hummus. Another wonderful example of our Plot to Plate approach, showing how the crops we grow can be turned into something tasty and nutritious!
Our gardeners also took their freshly grown cress onto the school yard for another of our popular break-time taste-testing sessions, giving children across the school the opportunity to sample some of our homegrown produce. Another lovely way of encouraging children to try something fresh and discover where their food comes from!
Seed saving was also on the agenda, ready for a special project next month!
We even managed to squeeze in a little makeover for our two large entrance planters, giving them a spruce-up with some fresh planting. They’re now looking lovely and ready for autumn!
One of the highlights of the week was sharing our very special GARDENA Top of the Plots ‘Kids on the Plot’ trophy with the rest of our Gardening Club children who hadn’t been involved in last Tuesday’s visit. Every single one of our gardeners has played an important part in helping us achieve this incredible award, and it was lovely for everyone to have the opportunity to celebrate their success together.
A wonderful week of hands-on learning, new experiences, and plenty of fun, and we’re looking forward to seeing what this week brings!
